3-3-5 personnel

I have a mailbox full of questions about the 3-3-5. Mostly about personnel.I thought I would throw out a look at how the front 7 would look.

I still have to go with big guys in my front 3. I know this defense is about speed speed speed but I would at least try some bigger guys at first. I think the defense will do better in this conference trying to stay as big as possible.

Strong side DE - Cam Heyward.
Nose - Larimore. I would love to be bigger here. I am at least going to have a big nose no matter how big I am at the end spots.
Weakside DE - Doug Worthington. The more three-man front the better for Worthington. He will be a better player and maybe a shot at the Show out of either odd man or 3-3-5.

Strong side LB - Homan. Doesn't stand out because he is not on the field alot. Nobody makes more out of so few reps.
Middle LB - Spitler. I want to be as big in the middle as I can. My Mike does not need to be fast. He needs to be fast enough.
Weakside LB - Sabino. He wants to go go go. In this defense that can be more of an asset.

People wanted to see Hines and Moeller on the field at the same time. They will be in the 3-3-5.
Strong side Spur - Tyler Moeller.
Weakside Spur - Jermale Hines.

Moeller is the stronger of the two and a little bigger. Hines, the more athletic and faster, plays on the open side.

Thanks, this is great. So who are the final 3 on the field then. Chikwa, Torrence/Amos and COleman?
LOVE IT!!!!!!

Would absolutely bust a nut seeing Moeller and Hines on the field and let loose.

I like it as a package to give a different look during games. Duane what kind of role does the Sam have in the 3-3-5 and where is his pre snap position? If Gibson could rotate in at the Sam situationally that would make it a very attractive option for me.

OK Now you lost me.
Now way Worthington plays WSE in front of Gibson or Williams, unless you think you move them back to the 2nd tier, but then they are in front of Sabino.
Secondly, I dont understand this Spur position, do they rotate w/ the LBs or rthe 5 dbs? I agree that Moeller and Hines are like 2 Tatums on the field w/ Coleman, Anderson, and Amos and like that move.
This does provide a lot of exciting possibilities on this defense. There are a lot of play makers here. I am curious as to who provide the depth in the DBs this year as the 3 SRs go away next year.

I think it is going to be determined by opposition, down and distance. He could line up inside or outside of the end but I would try to cheat by sitting him right on his butt as much as possible.

I think that is the problem with the 335 at the college level...

The lack of a natural edge and edge player.

You do not have that guy on the weakside ready to get after the quarterback if the OT outside foot drops...

The other problem I have with the 35 is this...I have no problem blitzing...I have a big problem with relying on the blitz...and that is what the 35 tends to lend itself too.

That being said...my starting lineup...

SDT: Cam
NT: Larrimore
WDT: Worthington

SAM: Homan
MLB: Spitler
WILL: Sabino

Strong Spur: Thad-let him play a loose 9 tech and go!!!!

Weak Spur: Moeller...have him play all 3 levels of the defense, would drive any QB crazy...

CB: Chekwa
CB: Torrence
S: Coleman

Note to the board:

Duane has lost his mind if he is spending this much time thinking about the 35 defense!!!

I like the personnel listed here, but how would a 3-3-5 do in the Big Ten? How does it fare against BigTen style plodders like Wisky and PSU? Maybe Iowa? I would imagine it would do well against the spread offenses like Purdue, NW, IU, but we rarely struggle with those offenses. Would it be used week to week, or could you make it work for all 9 Big Ten games?
