Great day for Buckeye Nation
Written by Duane Long

What a day. Especially coming off the biggest win in a couple of years. We get news today that Cam Heyward has made it official. He will return. Chimdi Chekwa announced he was returning. I would have called it a great day just with those two announcements but we got a huge verbal. Jon Hankins has issued a verbal to the Buckeyes.

Heyward coming back is huge. I would argue he is the most important recruit in the class. Getting a first round caliber DL back is always a good thing but in this case it sets the stage for the future. It allows the Buckeyes to keep Simon at defensive tackle. It allows Fellows to find his game without the pressure of having to perform as the starter. It allows J.T. Moore to redshirt. It allows us to keep our two best tackles on the field in Larimore and Simon. It allows Bellamy to find his way at tackle.

Hankins is a huge get in my mind. I was always impressed with this kid. He did not have a good summer. He was overweight and out of shape, not good to start with, but he then decides to show up at the Michigan State camp in that condition where he doesn't impress. In addition he was not qualified. He pulled himself together and had a great senior year. He is just what we need for the one-technique. He is massive and comes off the ball very well. He has a motor and I have seen him show a high football IQ. Another thing to consider. He has offers from Florida, Oklahoma and Alabama. What program is putting more defensive line talent out than those schools.

Chekwa coming back is going to get overlooked. Too much is being made of the Iowa game. He had a bad game. He has been a solid guy all year. Veterans at both corners is huge.

The only bad news of the day is Thaddeus Gibson is going pro. That decision cannot rain on todays parade. We expected him to go pro, and Nate Williams might be the better player anyway. We are so loaded at the weakside end spot that players who would start anywhere else are not even getting their uniforms dirty here.

Coming out of HS, how do you rate Hankins compared to Simon, Bellamy and Goebel?

although UF and Bama kept in contact with Hankins, neither gave him a committable offer. But an Oklahoma offer is still might solid for a DT.

It's about time Buckeye Nation get's to ride a little feel good for a while.
Keeping Heyward another year is great news.
Some of our fans should follow suit with an old DB mentality and have a short memory. Chekwa got beat a couple of times this past season, the best we've ever had the best there has ever been get beat out on that island sooner or later. He will be able to helps us.
I like the Hankins verbal, if the kids shows up ready to grow into it he could be a key piece of the D-line going forward.
Thanks Mr. Gibson good luck.

Just wondering your thoughts on landing Floyd. I've been reading a lot of articles that suggest he's going to be a Gator. Have you heard anything? With the way he's dominating at the USAAAB practices I'd love to see him in this class with Hankins.

After watching that defensive front four in November and January, I agree with you that keeping Cam is huge.

Against Iowa, had Chekwa caught that pass that bounced off him and then a teammate and ended up for a Hawkeye first down (in the game tying drive), do you think we would even be singling out that game as a bad one? Just saying, it is sometimes a fine line between success and something else. He makes that interception and there is likely no overtime.

Like many Buckeye fans I am excited about next season. I hope Tress unleashes our athletes on offense, because there are many. Also, who is JT Moore? I dont think I have ever heard his name mentioned. I will google him now because I really think you threw out a name to mess with people.

JT Moore was the very first commitment in this class, over a year ago. DL from Youngstown Boardman.
Very excited about the news yesterday except for Gibson leaving. Even though that wasn't a shock. I have a feeling he's a much better fit for a 3-4 defense than Gholston is because of his experience as a LB. Thad probably would have stayed at LB if Laurinaitis, Freeman, and Homan weren't blocking him from getting on the field. Was glad to see the coaches realize he was too good to sit and he was willing to switch positions to play.

duane:

You're 100% correct on Chekwa--I'm sick of hearing Buckeye "fans" bash him. He performed much better than I expected before the beginning of the year, and had a good, solid year with some road bumps along the way. Cam coming back was key to a NC run. But all of these guys will have to work hard and come back extremely hungry to do it. The games on the road against Wisky and Iowa will be tough regardless of our talent level, and Penn State will be no walk in the park. To get to the NC, we will need another big year from the defense and a better year from the offense, particularly from Pryor and the OL. I believe all of the guys are up to it, however, if they work extremely hard and improve (we will need a left tackle to step up to win it all)

I'm excited to have Heyward back. However, I like him playing inside for us. We've talked for years we have all the speed at the skill sets it's along the lines we've lacked at times. We didn't this past year with Worthington, Heyward and even Rose inside at times to spell the others an in pass rush situations. We have athletes with speed already for the end positions.
