Defensive tackle recruiting
Written by Duane Long
Monday, 20 July 2009 08:29

I know some are all worked up about adding some defensive tackles. I have not been one of them. You always take elite tackles if you can get them but it is not a need in this class. We have some nice young players with good size in the mix on campus right now. It is a good thing that we are pretty well stocked. Our tackle board just got turned upside down and the coaches could not have done a thing about it. I am trying to tell fans not to read too much into some of the things we are hearing with offensive line recruiting. I believe Garrison Smith said he framed his Ohio State offer. I thought we could maybe earn a visit out of that. Apparently not. I don't know if anyone expected that verbal. He seemed to be a kid who was going to take his time. Now things are looking a bit suspect on Hankins side of things. There has been talk of him losing weight. I didn't know what to make of that. The kid I saw on film from last year didn't need to lose weight. If he really does have a weight problem I have to wonder just how big he is gotten since then. He was listed at 325 in the film. He is it carrying it awfully well. You may want to rework the body some but that is what a nose tackle body looks like. Another report has him not looking good at Michigan State and still another has questions about academics. I hear Talbott looked like a real "specimen" at camp but I still have not seen any measurables on him. There seems to be little interest from the staff. I thought we would offer Jibreel Black. That would be a return to the kind of bodies we have had alot of success with. I could have gotten right with that offer. He is quick, explosive and makes plays. I saw 6 plays of Laken Tomlinson, all at guard. Too few plays and not as a very good angle to make a solid evaluation so it is hard to say but I see why most are recruiting him at guard based on that bit of film. I don't think we can make anything out of what Fre'Shad Hunter has said so far. It is tough to get top southern linemen out of the south. Shariff Floyd has been blowing up the combine and camp circuit but his film does not leap out at me. I am going to find it interesting to see if the staff decides to go after more tackles or if they move on to other priorities. I have not looked over the national crop at defensive tackle really good yet but on first blush it does not look like a deep class. Good top end but it thins quickly. The thing that jumps out at me is how many top kids are already committed. I think the talent level in the WHAC is enough that we should not reach. Fellows could be a three-technique. J.T. Moore too. I love Bellamy and Goebbel. I have always believed Mobley was going to be a tackle. I will give you a name that I would like to see in the mix. Micah Robinson.

Here is a link to his video on ScoutingOhio. http://scoutingohio.com/index.php/view-profile.html?task=userProfile&user=1218&name=rbnsn_mch%40yahoo.com

I think he would be great to come in on late if we have one left. He has a great body. Big square kid but in great shape. You could hang another 40 lbs on him over the next couple fo years and not impact his speed and athleticism. No word on his academics.

Jumping out like nobodys business. I have a couple of names for you that are going to be national kids. Chris Rock from DeSales. He is a 255 lb high school DE right now but will be a college DT. The other is Donovan Clark from Cincinnati Finneytown. He is going to be great. Whether it is DT or OT he is a special talent. There are a couple of other names out there who I am looking to see. I was not impressed with Chris Boles from Toledo Central Catholic. He was a name on the radar. It is early. He might come on. He is a MAC player right now.

I saw a report on Hankins after the Michigan camp. He weighed in at 350. Not good. Couldn't even run 5 straight plays without taking a break during drills. Disappointing to say the least...he was a nice player on film.

The staff shouldn't reach at all. Laken Tomlinson or Terry Talbott or nothing. I really hope they bank the scholly if it falls through.

The report says 350??? I wonder if that is a number from a scale or an estimate. If it was from someone just eyeing him I would not be surprised if the real number is higher. It goes beyond the number. He is trying to get recruited by the biggest schools in the country but he lets his weight get out of hand, and he is apparently doing nothing as far as conditioning and weightroom work. That is a huge red flag, especially with this staff that has gone out of its way to avoid kids that they had to get in shape before they could get them ready to play football. Very disappointing. I really liked his film.
DTs

I agree with most of what has been said here but do feel it would be a real plus if we could land at least one DT in the 2010 Class. I do not think we should stretch to get one but feel like we need to stay on Hankins. We really need a "space eater" who can hold up two blockers at the line to allow our LBs freedom to rome. While Goebel, Bellamy, Mobley and Simons are good they are not "space eaters". I think we should stay on Hankins hard. Yes, 350 is too heavy but he can take off some of this. If we can't get him I am for waiting until next year.

Not sure. It was just a blurb from one of the GBW reporters who was there on their message board.

Ohio State runs a one gap scheme so they really don't need space eaters. What made Hankins appealing was his quickness at that size. He would have been an awfully good one tech if he could have held weight. If he's ballooning up then he's not that valuable anymore.

Another factor here could be if the staff decides they like Corey Linsley at DT. That would make the position even less of a need.

If the kid is 350 as a JR in HS, what kind of weight problems is he going to have as he gets older?
Duane, Its seems kinda peculiar how you seem to be settled w/ enough DTs, although we only have 6 or 7 underclassman after 2009, but yet you are so helter skeleter on the OTs when we have 15 underclassman schollies + Boren and counting. Whats up there?

Bobby, I obviously aint Duane but the quality of underclassmen is different on the OL. In your 15, your counting kids who by every eyeball that has seen them practice are saying their NOT going to be productive at tOSU let alone starters. So that 15 is misleading when 7 or more will never see the field because the talent isn't there.

Which is why numbers matter.

There are 13 underclassmen scholarship OLs on the roster right now. Walk-ons do not count unless they are in the 2-deep.

You play 2 DTs all the time. You play 5 OLs all the time plus the OLs are always the biggest crap shoot in football outside of quarterbacks. I don't like the numbers. We are not going back into that but what it comes down to Bobby Haines, is I have lost faith in those who are responsible for the offensive line recruiting and their development. I want to see 15-18 scholarship OLs in the program even if Vince Lombardi himself was coaching them but I don't think it is going to be a surprise to you to learn I have lost faith in Bollman.

We do not have 15 recruited underclassmen OLs.

13+Norwell+Fragel+possibly Henderson or the Maryland kid. The numbers for the OL are alright heading into next season, especially if we can snag one more OL.

At one time I would argue with you on this. He has taken care of his body and looks leaner the last couple of times I have seen him. I was really impressed with him at the Big 33. We don't know where the body is going to take him. When I first saw him I was talking about him with Mark Porter. Mark said, "he is going to have abs at 290." The kid is a freak. We will see.

Your going Crazy about the OL and the rant is two years old. We have shown a pattern of getting better the last two years in OL recruiting but we have 6 months left in recruiting. If we land Henderson,Linder or the kid from Maryland you will end up looking like many of the posters that cry wolf prematurely.

Clark likes the Buckeyes. Finneytown rarely has a talented football player come through the school system down here (St. X is right down the road) so I wasn't sure of his abilities when watching him against mediocre competition, but if you (Duane) think he's legit, than hopefully he'll be one of the next great one's at OSU. He's Tressel's to lose.

We could land them. That is the misconception about what I am saying because of the fact that I am ready for a change at OC and OL coach. I know some are saying, why are you so pessimistic? I would ask that person, why are you so optimistic? The fact is we are both right. There is no evidence for either optimism or pessimism. The USC insider cannot say based on what is out there, that they are in any better shape than anyone else when it comes to Henderson. Neither can the Florida insider. Does someone know something? Please share. There is nothing in the public domain, at least anything credible, that Henderson is leaning one way or the other. Kouandjio is just now sorting things out too. Linder has cut it to 4 and we are one of them. I have heard nothing from any of my own sources that make me believe we are in a good situation with any of them. The only piece of info I have from a credible source is that we have alot of work in front of us to get James. I am not being pessimistic. I am just going with what I know. That it happens to be something some don't want to hear is something I cannot do anything about.

By the way, I did not take the discussion down this path. A question was asked and I answered it.

Duane....you and I both know that Tressel isn't firing Bollman and he isn't hiring an OC. So banging the drum for that is a waste of time. The minute your realize that the better off you will be. Surely, your sources will tell you that Tressel isn't going to let Bollman go and there wont be an OC hired as JT IS THE OC.

Knowing the above to be true....it is probably more productive to ask for Tressel to step down or to resign.

In previous posts Duane has come to grips with the fact Bollman ain't leaving.

Does anyone know what Bolls is like behind the buckeye curtain. Is he lazy? Is he hard headed? Could someone maybe shed some light as why Bolls is less than adequate as a O-line/OC?

I we land Henderson, Linder or James many people on this board and other boards are going to look foolish.

James is not looking good right now. While recent info has Henderson looking good for the Bucks, it is a long time until NLOID. I don't know anything about Linder.

As for the Bollman question above, that dude (and maybe Tressel) doesn't seem to think the O-line is a problem. Status quo is a hard thing change.

I said 15. After Cordle and Moses leave.
Count them up and tell me which ones have no talent

2010
Srs (6) BOREN/MILLER/SMITH/BROWNING/KERR/McQUAIDE(yes I included him), he's a lineman
JRs (4)
ADAMS/BREWSTER/BLANKENSHIP/SHUGARTS
SOPH.(4)
HALL/MEWHORT/LONGO/FRAGEL
FRESH.(3)
NORWELL + 2 JAMES/HENDERSON

Thats between 15-17 without WALK ONS, and without those talking about moving Linsley, Bellamy, or anyone else over from D.

That is 3 COMPLETE UNITS.
PHIL STEELE may know more than he we think he knows. I hope JT is thinking the same thing I am.
USC is in for a long one is he is!
