LaMarcus Joyner
Written by Duane Long

A back and forth earlier today with a poster on Bucknuts is what prompted this blog post. He was talking about LaMarcus Joyner being moved to safety. I dismissed the idea but the more I thought about it the more sense it makes.

Everyone wants to be as big as possible at corner but speed is so important at corner so most settle for smaller. Not Ohio State. The Buckeyes like bigger corners because we play alot of zone. That puts a premium on players who can tackle. We also demand that our corners play the run. To get what we want from a corner it is a natural to gravitate to bigger kids. Joyner is not the typical Buckeye corner recruit. He is listed at 5-8. Too often height/weight are exaggerated but I think it is accurate on Joyner. We are assuming he is a corner because of his size. Christian Bryant is listed as a corner because of his size. We are not recruiting him as a corner. We know he does not play corner in high school. Neither does Joyner. I have seen him make plays on offense. I have seen him be a special teams demon. I have seen him hit like a linebacker. He makes plays all over the field......except as a corner. I am impressed with his football speed but his 40 time is not one of an elite corner prospect with a reported 4.53. He is a playmaker. He is a bigtime hitter. He has instincts and a nose for the ball. All his skills, the things that have him rated a national top 20 player, are those of a safety. The only thing that says corner is his size. I have more to say about that soon. I have looked at all the Rivals tape. I have looked at all the YouTube tape. Can anyone point out to me one play where he even lines up at corner?

One of the big questions out there is why the Buckeyes are not offering Latwan Anderson. Maybe that is because we already have our other safety target.

There is an article posted that he's expecting to make his decision between FSU and OSU "soon". What are your feelings? We've been in the mix the entire time, but he lists FSU as his "dream school", and often being in the same state as the dream tends to favor that school. I'd love to see this kind come in and take over a safety spot, and just lay the wood on opposing players. In a year or two, once the 2008-2010 classes mature, we could really see something special again in the backfield. I think he could really be a big part of that.

I know alot of people are excited about him coming here but he likes an instate school about as much. I think it could break either way but with a gun to my head I need to see him say no to an instate school that he really likes.

B) If we sign him as a safety, then we can get away with signing 3 DBs instead of 4.

his 40 was 4.35 at the scout combine (shuttle was 4.53)

I did not see anything about that. Rivals still has him with a 4.53 forty.

i saw that too (rivals has 4.53 for both 40 and shuttle). obviously who knows with reported 40 times, but my guess based on the scout combine time and joyners general reputation for blazing speed (in one of the rivals clips he catches a full go jamal berry from behind) that he is faster than 4.53 would imply.

not that i disagree with your central point as to where he should play - what you write makes sense to me regardless. he does hit huge for a pretty small guy.

Hagen is listed with 4.29 Forty. Bigger kid and much more likely to be in this class than Joyner.

Rivals uses electronic timing. Just watch LJ's highlight vid. He plays like a 4.30 player.

If that 4.53 shuttle is legit, that is pretty bad for a corner. Or anyone that's not a lineman for that matter.
Reason why Anderson has no offer.
written by duperow40, July 02, 2009
I may be wrong but I would say teh reason Anderson has no offer is the staff really believes they'll land Hagan and Bryant. And has a 50/50 chance with Joyner. That would be three safeties. Plus with Rodgers there is another DB we have a legit shot with. Would say teh staff wants to see what happens with these guys first.

Notice I said he plays faster than he times. I like seeing a confirming 40 time but ever since I saw Mario Manningham outrun everyone on the field but could not put up a forty time that was respectable enough to post publicly I have become more interested in playing speed. Joyner looks like the fastest player on the field in every clip.
Corner size
written by JP, July 02, 2009
One other thing to remember when you think about corner size, etc., is that with so many teams running the spread, you need corners that are big enough to take on a blocker and either make a tackle or stretch out the bubble screen.

Small corners against bigger outside wide-outs is what allows the receiver to get to the outside and up the field.

On the other hand, safeties are being matched up more on the smaller slot receivers.

Come off it. If that 4.53 is legit, the shuttle time has lost a lot of meaning. Watch the freaking tape. He's an incredible athlete.
Joyner's Size as a DB/S
written by BuckNasty, July 03, 2009
DL:

I noticed that Joyner is only listed at 5'9 and about 165 lbs. Isn't this short to be effective against tall receivers? Despite this, I did watch his film and noticed that he hits like a mack truck.
