The Buckeyes starting RB will be...

Boom Herron is the heir apparent. He was the first guy off the bench. He is a very effective back but I don't know if he can become the kind of back that scares defenses. He is smart and has football smarts. I don't see a back with alot of great natural gifts. I know some have gotten excited about a healthy Brandon Saine. That is something that needs to be put into perspective. After the initial excitement about a better Brandon Saine, it appears that better is relative. He is better than he was but has not returned to his spectacular form from high school. He is better and can help this football team but is not an every down difference maker. Not yet anyway. Fans are excited about Jamal Berry. He is electrifying but that is against high school competition and he weighs about 190 in those videos. I see alot of potential in Berry. I think he can get bigger but that is going to take time. Fans need to understand it is a completely different world in college. Full grown men with years of intense weightlifting under their belts. We have seen other small backs here. They did not fare well. The difference between them and Berry is Berry has the frame to add some weight. I hear the comparisons to Tony Pittman. He was a little bigger but basically about the same size. He was forced into action as a freshmen. We did not have the talent at the time. He was quoted right before his sophmore year as saying he knows he will be better as a sophmore when he will be bigger and stronger. We know now that is true. My pick is Carlos Hyde. He is physically ready to play right now in our style of offense. I see a player who reminds me alot of Keith Byars in Carlos Hyde. Big blocky body and very quick feet. I don't know about the Navy game but by the Michigan game I think we see Carlos Hyde coming out on the field with the first team. He will need to show the coaching staff that he can pick up the blitz and other little things but he is the back who best fits our offense.

I think fall camp will tell the tell on Hyde. Not understanding blocking assignments have delayed even the most talented runner.

I think it will be Boom Herron as the main guy this season. Now others might push for major carries but when push comes to shove Tress will go will go with the back who understands the offense the best not who's the most explosive.

That said I wouldn't be surprised to see Hyde getting significant playing time in crucial games. I think he is the sleeper of this class.

Not sure who the starting RB will be, but I hope I'm wrong thinking the difference maker carrying the ball this year will be Pryor.

Seems to me the RB's will require some blocking, but TP is athletic enough to make plays on the fly, which will probably be a requirement this year, unless the o-line makes the most fantastic turnaround in the modern era.

Seldom do I disagree with you Duane but this is an exception. If there are no injuries to consider Boom will be coming out on the field with the starting unit against scum. Certainly he is not going to fill the shoes of Beanie (who could) but Boom is going to be a very good RB. I do however agree that at least for this year Hyde may leap frog Berry for PT. I too like his size better and think physically he is more ready to play in the Big 10 than Berry. However, by their sophomore year Berry may be back ahead of Hyde but possibly behind Berry and Roderick Smith.

Hyde is the only freshman that did not make it to campus. Little premature to believe he will be starting this season.

I disagree. If you are looking at it with the perspective that this is going to be a traditional Tressell type offense than you may be right, but I don't see that type of offense happening this year. I don't see us running out of the I-formation nearly as much. Instead I see us spreading teams out much more and possibly using our backs more as recievers, which is where Saine should be used more effectively. I also see us handing the ball off more out of the shotgun formation and that seems to lend itself fine to using smaller backs like Boom. In the end I see the freshman backs getting their feet wet, but neither will play a significant role IMO.

Hyde has not qualified according to him and needs a 17 on the next ACT test. Unfortunately, he will not take it until September 12th.

another site is reporting that Carlos Hyde's ACT score is not high enough to enroll in Ohio State. He has been told that he needs to get a 17 or higher to get in. They said the next assigned date to take the test in Florida is September 12.

Highly unlikely Hyde plays this year unless we have some injuries. Only player I can remember not qualifying by the start of the season and still playing is Jermale Hines.

I like Hyde's potential but I don't think he's ready physically as a true frosh. He's 230 lbs but he looked like he still had some baby fat to shed. He really could've used summer conditioning.

I think you're really going to eat your words re: Boom. I think he can be a 1,000 yard back with a 5 ypc average, even with Pryor and Saine taking some reps from him. He may not have good top end speed but he has a very quick burst and his vision and confidence improves every rep.

According to him, at least, he retakes the test September 12th and plans to enroll in Winter. That means he won't play at all this year. Which is unfortunate. I have to think the chances of Jordan Hall sticking at RB, at minimum as a safety net should injuries occur, just went up.

LOL. Why did I pick today to come up with this topic???

Seriously, does anyone else find this to be odd? We are weeks away from the start of practice and now we find out a kids test score is not good enough?

Odd??

That's a diplomatic way to put it. How did he even get an offer and take an official visit with such a weak score?

It is weird. There was zero buzz about him not qualifying. Then out of the blue we find out he hasn't passed his ACT and won't even get another chance to take it until September.
Hyde

Hyde is the back which best fits LAST YEAR'S offense, maybe not this year's. But actually I think you might be right about Hyde eventually being the guy. Early in the year we'll need Herron's experience. That young O-line is gonna look very much like a work in progress early on and we'll need his pass-blocking and his (exceptional) ability to find daylight where there is none. But if, after a while, there's still a lack of cohesion in the run-blocking game, Herron and Saine might not produce, which could start folks a'grumbling about giving the youngsters a look. So some time around the Purdue game Hyde might walk into a situation where he's relatively fresh, has had half a year to learn the offense, and has an offensive line in front of him that's starting to come together. Plus he's a back who's built for bad weather. OSU 27 UM 16. MVP - Carlos Hyde with 24 for 106 and 3 TDs (their defense will be better this year).

Carlos Hyde

Herron reminds me of Pitman, a good back but not a dominating power runner. I had hoped Hyde would come in and run over defenses.
