The rest of the class

With the pending verbal of Darryl Baldwin, I started looking at how I think this class ends up. There is so much chatter about more scholarships coming open but I am not hearing anything yet that tells me there are sure things in that regard. Anything can happen but for now I am going with the number 15. I count 7 verbals, not 8. I think the move Jamel Turner is making in going to a prep school is the beginning of getting that kid straightened around. Gary Hosteau thinks he will eventually end up at Ohio State. I think that this move is where we see that happen. I have little faith that he can get this turned around to be part of this class so I say 7 players in this class right now. I think Baldwin chooses Ohio State on the 19th. That leaves 7 spots.

I see Christian Bryant doing it the Glenville way and committing after the season. I have always said Jordan Hicks ends up at Ohio State. Others are starting to see it that way with his recent positive comments about the Buckeyes. Tyrone Williams offer is conditional but the staff does a great job of projecting these things. I know it went to hell in a handbasket with Carlos Hyde but no system is perfect. He will get his grades and he will be a Buckeye. I think he is one of the huge gets in this class. Down the road when he is being talked about as a top NFL draft choice we will hear about what a great job the staff did in finding an off the radar kid. His knee and his grades are why he is not a national kid. My feelings are Chad Hagan are known. I think he is a sure thing now unless one of the national kids comes on all of a sudden. We can't afford to hold him off. It is a position of need. The staff will have to take his verbal. We are down to 3 spots that are for sure open. I think one of them goes off the board with Will Hagerup. I hate the idea of taking one kicker in such a small class, let alone 2 but it needs to happen. The walk-on program has been good to the Buckeyes in the past with kickers. The worm has finally turned. We are getting nada right now. We had to make this offer. We have to take his verbal.

The final 2 are going to be a letdown for many who are reading this. Not for me. I see Dan Schneider as a tight end in this class and I see Skyler Schofner as the second OL. Schneider is a kid who fits what we do here. He is going to block strong but he can do something with the ball if we throw it to him. I really like Schofner. Physical kid with some serious pop. Great body on him. He needs to play to the whistle on every play. That is something I noticed about him on tape. He is out there walking sometime after he takes his man down. That can be fixed. I think these are a couple of really solid gets.

There are some names that I know you want to see with LaMarcus Joyner and Matt James right at the top of the list. My most recent info says we lose close battles for both. I am more convinced we don't get Joyner than I am James. I think he is more a possible get. I think if he gave his verbal now it would not be Ohio State. I think we still have a chance to change that though. I know some are getting excited about Arie Kouandjio because he has family here. Henderson is saying Ohio State is in his top 8. I don't think that is something to get excited about yet. Not until he says something that trumps his statement that Michigan and USC will surely get visits. I will believe Chaz Green visits when I see it. I will love any of the above to knock any of my list off of it. I just need to see that happen before I believe it. Cherry picking pro-Buckeye info that a recruit says is just setting yourself up for disappointment.

This is a solid class. Doubtful if this is the way it falls that we end up with a top 20 class let alone a top 10 class. For one thing numbers matter. A class of 15 is going to be hard pressed to make the top 10. To make the top 20 that class of 15 is going to need more big names than the above list can provide but it is a class that fills needs other than on the offensive line, and takes the best from Ohio. Unfortunately, that is not good enough this year.

DUANE: I heard you say that about Joyner just recently. Do you think that way because he didn't verbal at the spring game or is there something else you have learned through your sources? The last I heard him say anything was that we were tied at the top with Florida State, but I have noticed that I haven't seen any of his diaries on Bucknuts lately. Uh-OH! Would be a great shame if he doesn't come. I was counting on Duron Carter's help in bring him to Columbus.
Pieces of puzzle in opposite years.

Continuing to add high quality to the team is first and foremost - This class might not a have the quantity or even the bells and whistles of last few -- BUT
it could tie in nicely with last 2 and be an excellent bridge to 2010 with few key sure fire hits. We have two already with the offensive linemen from southern Ohio and the running back from Ft. Wayne. Adding the likes of Hicks and a few others would look very good -
LOOK EVEN BETTER WITH THOSE GUYS IN TEAM BUCKEYE PHOTO NEXT YEAR.

Duane,

I'm a little confused because I never saw Michigan on Henderson's list.

This is a quote from a 7/13 article from espn...his father speaking

"I know his five official visits. He will definitely visit Ohio State, Oklahoma, USC and Florida. Florida State is one that could change. He might decide to visit somewhere else besides Florida State. He could visit both the Florida schools or he might just take one to Florida."

Is there a later report that you're getting saying he is visiting Michigan?

If a kid is torn between his home-state childhood favorite and another program a decent distance away from home, he's a slam dunk to stay at home. I'd love to see LJ at OSU, but if we're 'tied' with FSU, he ain't coming to OSU. Hopefully, the program can blow his doors off on his official 9-13-09 and then let's hope that's enough.

What are you smoking? What are you really rolling in those cigars? If you really think for one NY minute we are thinking about offering Schofner, wake up pal. If we didn't offer the rest of them, why would we offer this less than luke warm body? We don't need another Ohio boy to waste a scholarship, so that you can bitch about wasted scholarships. Between Henderson, James, Kou, Linder, and others, at least one will come. Henderson is NOT visitng uscum.
We dont need Schneider if Smith doesn't come. You are so far off base about 15 total schollies, its stupid! Joyner comes and brings his boys, as well as other DBs.

He said report before last that the schools he was sure to visit were USC and Michigan. I did not see the 7/13 report. That in itself is telling. Where he goes does not matter if he is not coming here. He is moving things around. Schools are coming in and others are dropping off. Things are in flux. Nobody can say they are in a good position with him. Nobody can assume we are in a good position with him except those that want to believe that.

I have heard something that I did not want to hear but have not been able to confirm that. Mostly it is what H-Back said. We are even with a home state school. If he was an Ohio player we would all assume that we were going to win that battle, wouldn't we? Distance is often a factor in recruiting decisions. When it is the only factor between schools, the odds are not good for the school further away. A player has to prefer a school to go farther away from home. Is he a corner or is he a safety here? He has corner size and speed. He has great feet and quickness. He has the game and the mindset of a safety. We have a couple of young guys who could play alot of football for us at corner this fall. At least one starter looks to be an underclassman. At safety he will see a couple of senior starters. We don't know who is first off the bench yet. With both starters at safety being seniors I like our odds better if he is being recruited as a safety. I would tell him we would try him out everywhere.
THE REST OF THE 2010 CLASS...

I will not be a s brash as to question what you are smoking and don't think your speculations are that far of a reach. However, I do believe that we will have at least 18 schollies to offer. I also agree that we will not and should not be offering Schofner if we could not bring outselves to offer Donnal. I believe that we will land at least one from the group of Henderson, James, Kouandjio, Linder and Green but do not believe it will be Green. I am quite okay with Schneider and have liked him for awhile. Even though he is a quality player I do not think we will be offering A Smith as he has not convinced us that he has a true desire or interest in tOSU.

We have 16. I counted both Borens which took us to 81 recruited scholarship players. We have 11 seniors. That is where I got 15. The number is 16. We may very well have more. We can't project any player to go early. I can only see 3 players who even in position to consider it, Heyward, Gibson and Chekwa. This is going to be a very young team. We have not been seeing academic casualties. How many transfer candidates are there? This is a very young team. There is less reason for players to want to transfer with all those reps on the field for the taking. Some players that might consider leaving with veterans in front of them are likely to stick until as late as possible. Of course there is always a chance for surprises but you can't recruit based on that. They can only recruit based on what they know they have. That is what this 15, that should have been 16, is based on. If the staff knows something they will factor it in. Whatever the number they are sure of is what they will recruit based on.

I don't think the lack of an offer to Donnal was about not thinking he was Ohio State caliber. I think it was about the number of lineman they have pegged for the class. If they want to hold out for one of the national kids I would say roll the dice. Ending up with one OL in this class sets us back. We have put together a couple of nice classes. We lose our momentum with a class of one. We were only taking three anyway. If we get Donnal we have two great looking tackle prospects no matter what happens with the rest.

Schofner has said he hasn't even been contacted by Ohio State in over a month. I think it's safe to say that ship has sailed. He should've gone to a camp.

Schneider is close to committing to WVU. Doubt he gets an offer.

It's still July. There are going to be names that will emerge onto the scene. I highly doubt our class ends up looking like that.
Sadly, I agree with Duane
written by Jarheadbuck, July 19, 2009
I think Duane is indeed smoking the reality weed. For me the sadest part is that I think he's probably on the money regarding OL.

I've got no real beef with Schofner. He would be a decent get...if he were the 4th OL in the class (or at least 3rd with 2 stud OT types in front of him). I can certainly think of worse scenarios...such as taking only 1 OL. Unfortunately, I suspect like Duane that he will be our 2nd (and last resort at OL). BTW, I hope to hell I'm wrong and we do land Henderson, James, Linder or Kou from MD...I just don't see it happening.

As for kickers, I think Duane's right, but as for myself I wouldn't accept another K verbal until I had a couple good S, at least 1 TE, a good CB and a DT all in hand (none of which we have now).

That Schofner has not been contacted doesn't mean he won't be. Donnal was next. There was no reason to stay in contact with Schofner as there was every reason to believe that the offer would not have gotten by Donnal. He has now verballed Iowa. It is time to move onto the next guy. That next guy is Schofner. We need to take 3. We have to take 2. There is no reason to think we are going to get one of these national kids. No buzz at all that we are the team to beat for any of them. The best we have is that Kouandjio has family in Columbus. We have a little bit of momentum. The class of 3 from 2 years ago all start if they are completely healthy. Mewhort and Hall are real threats to the 2-deep as freshmen. 5 juniors on this roster. This is the year to look to fill those spots. They take a redshirt year, get in the weightroom, and are ready to get in the mix as second year players. That is the ideal situation. We really need 3. 2 we lose some momentum. With 1 we lose too much momentum. Schofner has Michigan, Boston College, Wisconsin, North Carolina State, Maryland and S.Carolina. He can play here. I cannot believe the staff does not see the need to get 3. This is not the time to roll the dice. Got one star caliber player in the fold. Try to get another is not wrong. It is not bad strategy. Not being aggressive enough has been something the staff has been criticized for, but there is no reason to operate without a net.

smilies/cheesy.gif Along w/those cigars, you must be drinking Duane, because we certainly have more than 11 seniors on scholarship. We have 15, and we have 82 total w/ Hyde removed. 82 minus 15 = 67 leaving 18 schollies to give out for next year.
Now when you sober up and count those schollies, I think you may allow room for some more DBs and DTs to put into this class, and for Gods sake please no more third rate Ohio OL to bitch about for 5 more years. Lets wait for the blue chippers. If your analysis of long distance doesn't make sense for Joyner, than the same make sense for enderson. And we are the closest visit for him.

Again, regardless of how many seniors JT gives schollies to, we count everyone else, and now Hyde does NOT count for NOW; we have 17 to give. At what time does Evege’s injuries become career ending? Per your conversation, can Wells get his head together and stay here? How many egos can ride the pine?
We DO have 17 scholarships to give plus the thought of early exits of Gibson, Heyward, Chekwa, and Rolle.

WOW IS THAT TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT
We are taking about the 3 scholarships open that JT may offer to 5th yr. walkons Joe Gantz, Marcus Williams, Ryan Schuck, etc. which is a tradition here as they have been here for 5 years. The fact is there are 15 Srs now on schollies, and there may be 18 after JT gives out his traditional final yr. schollies. So I guess you just don't have much knowledge about Buckeye History now do you YOUNGSTER SMART ASS? or is that DUMB ASS?

Guess your right about this being a little lean with good prospects in Ohio this year. Last year OSU got all they wanted from Ohio and most early. Then abiout 4 other BT teams took some darn good left overs. Illinois got 3 or 4 from the Buckeye State.

Not happening this year as of yet !

Thank you;

I may be an optimist, but we have everything Henderson is looking for, and Michigan is NOT on his visit list. OSU/OKL/TX/USC/FLA. We are closest. I think James is better off w/us the longer he takes, as he would have gone ND way if chose now. Linder has to be impressed w/shoe when he plays here, and KOU and brother's uncle have to t/w Fickel. That is a mouthful Duane. IMO at least ONE. IMO we get TWO.
Joyner may love FSU, but Bowden is leaving, and may be on Probation.
I think we get ONE DT.
And I can only hope A Smith is offered and is not pissed off about not being offered earlier, but not a huge loss as we really dont need a TE, as much as every one think so.
We do have 17 plus the attrition expected. With the huge depth chart we have, I expect some more attrition soon.
And can Turner or Hyde make grades next year? Who knows?
I dont know about Hagerup. A Punter only? Walkons come along every day.

16 Plus the loss of CARLOS HYDE now makes 17.
CARLOS HYDE has to qualify sometime. He may be another SHAQ ROWELL. We don't know. But right now we have at least 17 and counting; and DONNIE EVEGE has not been healthy since he has been here.

Haha, you have to hold a scholarship for Hyde dude... Come on...

And Duane never said the count wouldn't end up at 18 or whatever. All he was saying is you can't plan on it until you hear something more solid that says otherwise. Unless you want to be like the SEC where you over sign and then basically cut players.

Who's talking about oversigning? Hyde has to go back to school for another year. Who knows if he even comes back to OSU? Nothing is for sure until it is for sure. Anything can happen between now and then.

Wait, so are you saying OSU should or should not hold a scholarship incase Hyde makes it to OSU after a year?

We have 14 scholarship seniors with 2 additional scholarships. Those 2 were awarded to walk-ons. But you don't count the walk-ons because their scholarships don't renew unless there are leftover scholarships again the next year.

This leaves 16 scholarships available for the 2010 class.

The Hyde situation is essentially, Hyde's qualification is NOT based on grades. But an ACT score that he can retake in the next couple months. If Hyde meets the minimum requirement on his ACT, he can be a Buckeye. So therefore, he doesn't need to attend Fork Union for an entire school year. But only one semester. And Hyde could come back and join the team in the Winter Quarter. So the team has to hold the Scholarship for Hyde until they know whether or not he will have his ACT score ready by the Winter Quarter.

So technically, as it stands now, we ONLY have 16 scholarships available. With that in mind, due to attrition, I think 18 is a realistic and reasonable number.

Playmea,
That's exactly what duane said in this post. We're trying to get whoever the commenter is to understand it but he's having trouble so we have to walk him through it step by step. He's arguing that you never know if Hyde makes it to OSU or not but doesn't realize that that supports what Duane was saying and means you have to keep a ship for him.
