Camp News - The next Buckeye offer?
Written by Duane Long

A player whose name has come up on this blog has surfaced as a star of camp. Huber Heights Wayne defensive tackle prospect Terry Talbott has come in and put on a show. You can see video of him in the Buckeye Vision section of this blog. Notice how often he does not use his hands. Needs alot of work. He is just beating his opponents with elite level explosion off the ball. I have not heard measurables listed yet but the words "physical specimen" are being thrown about. We are kicking around alot of names right now with the camp but I am not going to be surprised to see this one as the next Buckeye offer. He has an impressive offer list already with Michigan, Wisconsin, UCLA and North Carolina State already coming in with offers. Wayne has a coach who has a long time warm relationship with the Buckeyes. I would go so far as to call Wayne a Buckeye pipeline. Not putting out the numbers that Glenville puts out but when there is a Buckeye caliber kid the odds he comes this way are quite good. I don't know if Talbott has a relationship with Braxton Miller, and I am not sure that we need it, but it can't hurt to have someone he knows already in the lockeroom and someone he can room with.

On the video watch what he does at the 1:40 mark. That is a player who is thinking on the field. He reads the offense as they are lining up, reads the keys from his coach and puts himself in position to make a play. At the 2:25 mark he beats the double team, something the great ones are going to see and something they need to learn to deal with. At the 3:20 mark he takes the blocker back into the back and tackles both. The very next play he blows up 2 blockers to force the back wide for a short gain and comes back on the next for a tackle for loss. Great looking player.

You have to like our odds of landing top defensive tackle talent again this year with the offers that are out there.

When you say a kid isn't using his hands - I'm assuming that is a skill that can easily be taught?

You hope they come in with the basics of using their hands but all of them have to learn advanced hand fighting techniques. Some DLs take martial arts to get better at hand fighting.

Duane,

At which positions do you think OSU can still sell "depth chart/playing time" to the elite recruits (top 50 or so)? That tends to be a sticking point with the long distance recruits and the last two classes have filled most of the positions with elite young talent already.

To me, TE and S are the obvious candidates. Would you include OL, DT... Could a top flight CB come in and start over Howard/Brown/Barnett, etc.?

Sure they could. None of them have really done anything yet, so there's no reason a top-flight recruit should think differently. I think the only corner that's got a position locked up at this point is Chekwa, and he'll be a senior when this recruiting class checks in. I think any top-flight secondary recruit should recognize that OSU is a place where underclassman can, and often do, receive early playing time.

You're missing the point. The same thing that you said could be said about almost every position. The question is whether the staff feels they have someone at each position that they see as their guy in the future or if they think a freshmen could come in and have a better than average shot at taking the spot.

The same could be said, but I think the history of the position shows the truth more than other positions. We've had a lot of guys come in an play early in the secondary, versus a position like DL or QB where I'm not sure the history shows it to be the case. So when a coach tells these players, "if you're good enough you'll play", I think you can look to history in this case and feel he's speaking the truth.

In regards to the current guys coming in, I'd just assume that it's too early for them to hang their hat on anyone, feelings or not.

I would include OL, TE and safety. The problem with safety is we have numbers that other schools can negatively recruit with. I think we are loaded at corner and we are young at corner. Unlike at safety, other schools could print out the rankings of our cornerbacks to hurt us with bigtimers that expect to play early.

Our Defense is starting 5 Seniors and 6 Juniors. If that is not an indication that there is openings to play, I dont know what is.

On Offense, we are starting 1 True Freshmen, 3 Sophs, and 1 Junior. There is again a shot of where we play young guys.

I meant to say at the skilled positions. Add 2 or 3 more Sophs on the line.
