The Buckeyes 2010 prospects - Do we have a shot?
Written by Duane Long

College Football News is coming on as a solid source for conversation about college football. Buckeye fans have had enough of getting beaten up by ESPN. College Football News is showing itself to be more balanced.

In a recent story they say that Ohio State can be back in the national title hunt...... by the end of this year. Yes, 2009-2010 not 2010-2011. That is not so hard to believe. The Buckeyes are across the board #7 in the country. Everyone above them has tougher games on their schedules but the Buckeyes have Penn State at their joint and an improved Michigan at the Big House. In between is another tough high profile game with Iowa. The chances the Buckeyes are at least in the top five are high if we win out.

Fans are not excited about this news. Because we are a year away fans see another ugly nationally televised loss. We need to get over the hump. We need to get over the hump several times. First, you have to get there. Can't win a national match-up if you are not playing in one. The competitor in me says keep trying. Never give up. I want to play and win, against the best of the best. No matter how many times they beat me I am going to stand-up and climb back in there time after time. What has me excited about the possibility is this. I don't believe we make it that far if we do not improve. We have to get consistency out of Pryor. We will not beat Penn State at Penn State. We will have a hard time with Iowa. That is a very good football team with the best quarterback in the Big Ten.

I would want to play Florida, Alabama, whoever, no matter what, but if we win out it will be because we are good enough to be there.

I have a bad feeling both this year and next year are tweener years when it comes to the MNC. The defense is outstanding and getting better week by week, and there is no question in my mind that it is a championship-caliber defense. Next year, we will likely be think up front and, if the past is any indication, we will play much softer because of it next year. We will be breaking in new safeties and possibly another player in the nickel.

Offensively, I think we can be better than we have shown, but we should still be much farther along than we are now. It leads me to believe that we would see major puckering if we made it to the MNC this year. Our passing game should be downright scary 6 games in, yet we ocntinue to look for opportunties to abandon it as soon as we get a lead. It's not developing, and there is very little evidence to suggest it will be championship caliber by the end of the year. With the FG unit struggling (by OSU standards) we need an offense that has the stones to want to punch it in on every possession. It's not there yet. Will it be next year? It may have to overcome the defense in games against equal or better (sic) talent, and we should be there. But then again, what will change between now and then -- it has to be more than just experience.

We hear so much whining about JT, but he totally believes September is for pretenders, November is for contenders. He has proven over and over his teams are better at the end of the season. This team is on a similar path, and with the defense and special teams we are seeing, these guys have their shot.

You have to love the chemistry and maturity of this team as well. Whatever their level of accomplisment is perceived to be, you just haven't heard of any of the peripheral crap that seemed to fester within the core of the last several versions of the Buckeyes.

This is a very talented team, and regardless of who's shooting arrows at them, they seem to stay focused on the task at hand and work as a TEAM. This group is just so much more fun, and you can only believe they are moving forward. Hopefully the injury bug doesn't hit, and they will be contenders down the stretch.

The pollsters spoke volumes as well with OSU's subtle little move up over Cincinati last weekend, and three consective victories over Penn State, Iowa and Michigan would be impossible for even Mark May to pooh pooh. This is just a fun fun season, and we're only half way home.

Defense wins Championshiops. It is as if this Buckeye Nation has never watched Professional Football. They have never watched the Baltimore Ravens and Ray Lewis willed his great Defense overcome his pathtic enemic offense to Super Bowls. Jim Kelly has lost four. Marino never won one. Or the Pittsburgh Steelers get Steel Curtain Defenses overcome their lack of offenses. All the great professional teams have always won the Super Bowls because of great defenses and a running game, NOT because of a great passing game. Elway never won until he got a running game, and Peyton never won until his defense came together. THE Chicago Bears won with their 46 Defense. Tampa Bay (Monte Kiffin) destroyed Oakland high flying act, and the great 17 and 0 Miami Dolphins won with the no name defense. Dallas had the dooms day defense. The PATRIOTS (Belecheck). It is all about the defense, not the offense.

Excellent point Duane. Those that are afraid to play in the championship game this year don't realize that they will probably not be feeling the same way if we win out.

I think OSU's chances for a MNC are better this year than next year, so I hope OSU can win out and test their mettle. Losing Worthington, Rose, Heyward and Gibson (most likely)along with Coleman and perhaps Chekwa is really going to hurt the defense. Pryor is too up and down to rely on him to simply outscore people in 2010. The defense is there, the offense is getting there, depending on the week you watch.

Ed:

He has proven over and over his teams are better at the end of the regular season.

Fixed that for you.

The pollsters spoke volumes as well with OSU's subtle little move up over Cincinati last weekend, and three consective victories over Penn State, Iowa and Michigan would be impossible for even Mark May to pooh pooh.

Nothing is impossible for Mark May to poo-poo. Mark May's negativity is as constant as the rising sun, Mark Schlabach's SEC gushing, or Cowherd's prodding for ratings.

ESPN has never been the bastion of quality journalism, but this decade they've all but abandoned the concept of objectivity for pushing the "entertainment". I guess it's the first letter of their acronym for a reason.

"First, you have to get there. Can't win a national match-up if you are not playing in one."

And Tressel has proved that even when you get there, it's awfully tough for him to win. I can't believe that the pollsters will give Ohio State another shot at the Nat. Ch. How 'bout the PAC 10 RU in the Rose Bowl. I sure don't want to see USC again.

To be fair, it's tough for every coach to win. No one does it easily. Bob Stoops now has three trips, two big losses, and one close win as well. There's only one coach with multiple BCS NCs at this point, Meyer, and even he managed to wedge a subpar season between them. We used to praise Tressel for his ability to win big games. I have to believe, at some point, Tressel will get back over the hump. But you have to get there first. I'm not sure the pollsters will give him the chance though.

I see this defense as similar to the 2002 iteration. Might give up some yards between the 20s but man they get stingy in the red zone.

People are writing Terrell off because of lack of development. I guess I had forgotten how easy the QB position is to master and stay on top of. If only the coaches would talk to him on the sideline he might get better. LOL. I think TP is one tough kid who is going to silence the doubters even this year! I didn't care about one word he said in the presser yesterday. I liked that he was ready to man up and face his distractors. That's what I got out of it.

The hand wringing is being colored by the Wisconsin game. People wouldn't be nearly as in a hurry to jump off the cliff if the Offense had performed like they did against Indiana or Illinois.

I think there are a couple of contributing factors to that game that are worth considering. First, the flow of the game was difficult for the offense to get into any kind of rhythm and that is critical for any offense.

Not helping the cause was that much of the OL had been battling the flu during the week. Yes, Pryor hasn't look good passing the ball in the last 2 games. In fairness, against Illinois Peyton Manning wouldn't have looked good either. The weather played a huger role in the ability for either QB to pass with any effectiveness. What I believe we will see is that a combination of flow of game, a good defensive scheme to make Pryor uncomfortable and this flu bug that is going around will account for a lot of the woes the offense showed last Saturday.

RE: the MNC. There is a LOT of football yet to be played. UC could fall tonite. OU could beat Texas. Va Tech could lose 2 GT. USC could get upset by the Lamers. IF all those happened this weekend the buckeyes are sitting at 4th. Alabama likely faces Florida in the SEC championship.... the odds of the buckeyes being in the picture are more likely than not. The buckeye defense IS national championship caliber. The offense just needs to improve a little bit. Not the massive improvement some think has to happen.

Color me optimistic on this offense. I think the Wisconsin game is more an abhorition than an indication of major, core problems

If you don't have the heart to step in and take your shot whenever it comes you'll never have the heart of a champion.

It just doesnt matter!

As long as Jim Tressel is running the offense, this program will be good, not great.

Pryor needs to be benched. He is DREADFUL bad. They can not win with him under center passing the ball
