Defensive tackles and recruiting rules
Written by Duane Long

I am commenting on this in regards to defensive tackle recruiting but it gets into the etched in stone rules of recruiting in general, in addition to defensive tackle recruiting:
I still will never understand the reluctanace of our staff in recruiting high level interior defensive linemen. They are out there and have to be interested in coming here. I would think. We are one of the top five elite programs.
That is not the case. Love of school and players going to the NFL are the bedrock overwhelming reasons why players pick a school. Most of the kids who love a school are instate kids that came up with that school like we did Ohio State. Out of state is mostly and certainly out of region, is about Sundays. It is about the lists that come up with the schools who have put the most players in the Show. It is hearing that Ohio State has put how ever may players at the recruits position into the Show. Think about it like this. How many kids that you grew up with were fans of a team 1,000 miles away? What about your friends? 80% or more are Buckeye fans. Probably the same percentage are Browns or Bengals fans. Why would a kid from Florida leave Florida when he can see schools right around the corner,
where his family can come watch him play every weekend, and those schools are winning national championships and sending players to the Show. We are not putting tackles into the NFL. Ryan Pickett is the only one that I know of who is active on an NFL roster. We have eight receivers. That is why five of the eleven scholarship players on the roster, I am including committed seniors James Louis and Ty Williams, are from out of state. Seven NFL corners dot NFL rosters. Eight corners on this roster, four from out of state. The region is not producing great quick big bodies like we see in the south. We need some instate wide bodies, at least in region wide bodies, or we need some NFL success to draw these unique athletes from other parts of the country. We can contrast that with some bit of success in the NFL at defensive end. We have some success at recruiting defensive ends out of state in recent years. Not as much as we want but certainly an uptick in getting elite DEs.

Duane: Why can't you take a big offensive lineman who is nasty and convert him to defense. I look at Corey Linsey and I see nasty written all over him.
There are lots of bigs on offense in Ohio.
Moving DEs down
written by Steve P, October 05, 2009
I always assumed the coaches wanted more athletic players on the defensive line and therefore recruited DEs and moved some down to DT as needed. Robert Rose, Cameron Heyward, and Doug Worthington are examples of DTs that came in as DEs and can now play either position.
Just thoughts of mine. I know next to nothing

I like the type of DT's Iowa and PSU traditionally bring in - and they are not so far away. Foreign territory yes - but worth the effort. Maybe we should lengthen our recruiting borders - staff can expense it under the NEEDMOREBIGS who move will - account.

The OOS guys we have gotten recently fit a particular mold the staff likes and I believe will serve us well - Ex Wrestling guys - Larimore and Goebel.

On a side note - during the our last home game noticed some friendly words and smiles amongst J.T and Josh Brent after the game. A player close to the 2 of them overheard Brent saying ... ' If I could do it over '

You're probably more likely to find a DT from Middle Tennessee State or another small no name school as you are to find one from a football power. Also, look how many DL come from the south. Who was the last GOOD DT to come from the Big 10.
Crazy talk about defensive linemen

I don't care what the recruiting rules are that our coaches are following. We might have the best defensive line in the country. They beat up USC. Had we had any offense, we would have crushed them. They had one meaningful drive and that was when the defens was tired because, as noted, we had no offense to run some clock and score some points.

He is a rare one. Most OLs are not DTs because they are not athletic enough to be DTs. Linsley is an exception. I would have loved to see him get a shot at DT especially after he played so well when given a shot when he was a senior and in the all-star games after the season.

That is what ended up happening but in the case of Worthington he was supposed to be a DE. There was never a discussion about him being a DT coming out of high school. There was never a consensus on Rose. As a junior I thought he would be a tackle. As a senior he looked like an end all the way.

We used to do that more. Get smaller high motor guys, Tim Anderson, David Patterson, Quin Pitcock, Darion Scott, were all out of that mold.

Duane It was my question you were answering.
If you go back in Buckeye history, we can handpick many stars from out of state.
I just dont understand why they are so damn selective unlike Tenn or Michigan or the like and offer less.
As far as players go 1,000 miles; These guys go to Notre Dame, USC, Texas, Florida, LSU.
They go across the country to play nowadays for the elite teams.
Otherwise Notre Dame would not have a team.
