Indiana Game Review
Written by Duane Long

Who was that guy standing beside JT who looked to be running the offense? No, it was not satan. For those that didn't notice, go back and look at your game tape. Hazel is putting his stamp on the offense. We look different. More importantly we look better. Early in the game we threw a screen pass. Yes, we did. On second down no less. The linebacker made a great play but it was a great call. We are second and more than six, JT is going to run the ball. Everyone attacks the run against us on second and long. A screen is a perfect call. The only play calling that bothered me was on the second missed field goal. A show of hands, who knew JT was going to play for a field goal once we got inside the 20? All of that was pure Tresselball. He can't help himself. He was going to make sure he put Indiana down two touchdowns. That was too safe. They were still fighting us but a touchdown takes all the steam out of them. We let them stay in the game with that. Pryor was wore out from all the running.

As far as the running game is concerned, I thought we could have run right at this team all night. Saine gives us something extra. His ability to carry tacklers is something we don't get from Herron, and he is back to being really fast. I think it is going to be hard to justify putting Herron back in there as the starter. He was doing a great job of following his blockers and setting up his blockers. Pryor ran better. He frustrates me with too much east-west. He was getting upfield in this game consistently.

Speaking of consistency, if we can just get Pryor to always end every throw on the ball of his left foot he becomes the passer we want him to be. I would make that something we do in practice. 100 balls every practice where the sole point is to end up on the ball of his left foot. He has a gun. He is accurate. That is so important. I have never seen a quarterback who was not an accurate thrower become an accurate thrower. I have seen inaccurate passers become more accurate but never really accurate. Pryor throws a beautiful ball when his mechanics are right. Look at the balls to Posey. Both touchdown passes, the one he caught and the one he dropped, were beautifully thrown.

Posey has to help his quarterback. He dropped a perfectly thrown ball in the end zone. Posey is a bigtime talent trying to become a bigtime player. A bigtime player makes that catch. He dropped a few others in this game.

Carter catches everything thrown to him, and he blocks too. He should get the hit of the game on that block on Pryors scramble. We need to see more of him.

I want to go back and take my time with the offensive lineman. On first blush I can say this was the best game for Mike Adams. Shugarts is starting to come on.

We are playing alot of our freshmen. Saw Marcus Hall at right tackle. Storm Klein was in there on special teams and made two tackles on the last Indiana drive.

The defense missed a shutout with poor tackling. Both touchdowns had plays where just being fundamentally sound in tackling would have made a difference. This was the worst game we will ever see from Brian Rolle. On their first touchdown he missed a couple of tackles and took a bad angle on another.

Did you notice the defensive backs talking to each other after plays quite a bit? We have some disarray. Down a starter and other players moving around the depth chart. It was definitely a soup sandwich out there too often.

Great game by Anderson Russell. I never thought I would be saying that again.

Cam Heyward was dominating up front. He was getting a push on every snap. Had a couple of hurries. I don't know if he can be blocked one on one right now. Gibson comes back with another strong outing. He is playing smarter. That is something he has to be given credit for. He had so many great plays last year but far too many bonehead plays too. Out of position. Not holding contain. We are not seeing that this year. Robert Rose has to get more playing time. I tip my glass to him. He has perservered. He is one of those players like Justin Tuck in the fact that his best could still be ahead of him. He has missed so much time. Draft him late, he is low risk/high possible reward. If he stays healthy and on the field he could blossom into something. If he doesn't you don't have any money in him.

John Simon continues to stand out to me. Whenever he is on the field he gets my attention. I have yet to see him get blown off the line. He is massively strong but what I notice out of him is solid technique. He gets into the pads and gains leverage. He uses his legs well. He finds the ball. I was asked if he could be a possible at strong side end. I said I didn't see it. After watching him today, if Heyward leaves I would give him a look. He is undersized at tackle. He would be undersized at end too but not as much. He plays smart and has good technique.

Homan is playing the kind of football I thought he could play. He just needed to get on the field. Spitler had another good game. Sweat always gets my attention when he is on the field. He finds the football. That is what you want a linebacker to do. Storm Klein made the most of his opportunities. I don't know if we needed to blow his redshirt with our depth but since we have I would like to see him get as much time on the field as he can. I think he can be a great player here.

Ohrian Johnson was around the ball alot tonight. I could not be happier about that. He sure looks the part. Very athletic looking kid. As the night wore on I noticed him more. That could be huge that he is finding his way around out there.

I really hope that Larimore is really a knee sprain as was stated. When I see a knee injury and teammates gathered around in support, I get concerned.

I posted on Bucknuts also but I didn't think the team seemed to inspired tonight...they just kind of "blah'd" to 33 points...once they got 17-7 they knew Indiana didn't stand a chance...

That being said, I'm glad they team "blah'd" tonight so the coaches can chew some ass next week with Wisconsin coming to town...

I think Pryor is really pressing to meet expectations-both his and others. Those throws off his back foot with the horrible "hurried" type mechanics reminds me of when golfers try and will a 3' put in the hole rather than keeping their head down and completing the stroke. It's really based in the fear of failure and lack of self confidence. I see TP having this struggle, maybe for the first time as he probably breezed thru HS. I think this is very positive for TP as he can overcome this with maturity and tutoring from JT. I'm a huge critic of JT's offensive philosophy but there is no better mentor of a young man than JT. I don't think this is a talent issue as many feel TP is just not a QB, I see the same as you Duane.

I think TP's intelligence and awareness add to this confidence issue. He's very aware of these mistakes and probably sees other "young" QB's succeeding which leads to more pressure on himself. I've coached a lot of kids in sports and the bright ones (like TP) seem to struggle with this more. I'm pretty confident he'll get over this, maybe a Troy Smith or Chris Carter can help in this process.

I liked that we were throwing slants last night. If Pryor can consistently throw the slant and hit hte guy in the chest then we have the playmakers to make something happen in space.

I think we should have given Saine a few more carries. It looks like Boom is going to be fine from how he was moving around on the sidelines last night, so I don't think we need to be overly protective of Saine. It was nice to see Jordan Hall get some carries, but I really want Saine's confidence level sky high going into the tough part of our schedule.

I liked to see Lamaar Thomas out there at RB in the spread and at slot faking end arounds. NOW, all we need to do is get him the ball a few times.

It is amazing to me how T Wash has disappeared. He seemed to be our stretch the field guy in the spring and had one bad game with drops and disappeared. It was like the coaches gave him once chance and then they said okay Duron beat you out. I think Duron is going to be great, but I don't know if he can stretch the field at this point like T Wash could. I wish we were still seeing T Wash on the field a little more.

I think that Spitler did look better tonight, and I give him props for that. He is good at the point of attack and when Indiana ran those slow developing counters and reads his way he did a good job.

Homan is Homan - I think he is good for a couple good plays a game, but he never really jumps out at me.

I think our d-line looks great and I hope that Larimore is okay. The only gripe I have is that we don't move Thad around enough and use his athleticism. On 3rd and long we just put him on the edge and the Tackle knows Thad is going to rush off of the edge. I did like when we had both Thad and Nate in at the same time coming off the edges. Nate is is so strong and plays the run very well for his size at DE.

While Anderson did have a few plays that stood out, he still made too many erros in my opinion - missed tackles and just really looks like he has trouble changing direction anymore. That being said, I was very happy for him and proud of him for having a good game.

Storm is going to be a future All-American. The kid is a pure football player, plain and simple.

Duane - great write up. The only other comments I would have are still around the passing game. I have thought that we need to script the first 15 plays in order to get the offense into a rhythm and help TP just go out and play, as opposed to the play-by-play schizophrenia-fest we normally see with the offense. But part of those 15 plays would be some quick slants to help get his confidence going, get the WRs into the game, and to open up the box a little bit. When we get the ball quickly into receivers hands, good things have happened.

But what we are now seeing is a QB who is rushing anything and everything. We missed badly on the quick slants yesterday, and I think we need to just start calling them "slants". TP takes the snap and tries to get rid of the ball so quickly that I don't believe he even has a grip on the ball. I know his feet are not set. I know he is badly off balance. I know that he is trying to make the throw entirely with his arm, and doesn't get into position to deliver with a smooth, consistent pass. Why is he pressing on such an easy play to execute? If he gets his feet set as the snap is coming back, he's won 75% of the battle, but he stands flat footed, with poor spacing and hips pointing in a different direction than his upper body. It almost hurts to watch.

We have already recognized the lack of execution in many areas, most notably in the zone read hand offs where he makes no attempt to sell the fake. If there's one thing Tate does well (not comparing overall) it's selling the fake, which pays off in a huge way when he's running all alone away from a defense who bit on the fake because Tate doesn't just stand there when he hands it off. That stuff should be clearly evident on game film.

Is somebody truly working with Pryor, or did they just hand him an "Elite Quarterbacking for Dummies" book and tell him to show up on Saturdays?
This sums it up ......

My exact same thoughts. I usually find something to disagree with you but
there tackling in 1st half was awful. Especially Rolle. Heads down, arms swinging. Just awful.

Use your body and bring it !!

2 guys that impress me are Homan ( good tackler ) and Andrew Sweat.

I have been very critical of Russell so I decided to accentuate the positives of this game for him but now that you bring it up, I have to agree. In between good plays were some really bad ones. Look back on the Denlinger interception. What was he doing 3 feet from Denlinger?

I was glad to see Russel make a few plays but I think we really missed having Coleman out there. One play that really stood out to me, a receiver caught it with 1-2 yards to go for the first down and he dragged Russel past the line. I don't think he picks up the first against Hines or Coleman.

Good analysis. Denlinger is having a great senior year as well.

Russell did miss plays but he made the 2 big ones this week. They were easy but being a Redskins fan and watching Carlos Rogers I don't taking anything for granted. You could hand it to him and he'd drop it.
