A lot is being made about Jim Tressels press conference yesterday. If you have not seen it or heard it I think you may want to. It is not the usual Senatorial say nothing that we are used to from JTs pressers.
I don't know about the other sites but Bucknuts has one of the largest threads I have seen in awhile over something said in the presser. The thing is, it is focused on the wrong thing. Some saw this statement from JT as insulting to Buckeye fans when he answered a question from a reporter about how his emails were going, " I probably haven't gotten as many as you have, but we get lots of emails every week, even when we win, so those don't affect you any more than the effect you put on yourself when you're watching the film. Those people had nothin
g to do with you deciding to do this or that.
So, you know, honestly, the thing when I read some of them is I feel terrible for them because there's no way they're happy. They've got to be some of the most unhappy people in the world, and I feel bad because we just made them less happy, and I hate to be a part of making someone less happy. I mean, they're already miserable and so to make them less happy I'd feel bad."
When I watch the presser I don't know what to make of it. Some say he was joking, and I can see their point. A good number think he was insulting to fans. I think it was a passive/aggressive thing. His tone may have been joking but look at the words. Definitely not your usual JT comment.
I think too much is being made of it. He got a little salty. He is under some pressure right now. Beyond that he is a competitor. I don't think he is any happier about that flashing neon sign that had 0-5, now rolling over to read 0-6. There was a much more important comment made that stuck out to me.
First, let me say this. I am so sure that Jim Bollman is gone that I am ready to consider some sort of bet with those that don't think so. Maybe something concerning internet silence like C_Woodson and Ottbuck did recently on Bucknuts. Since I make a living doing this, going silent for awhile is a big deal. That I make a living doing this tells you just how sure I am of this. I will go silent for a month if Jim Bollman is either the OC or the offensive line coach next year. No posts anywhere. Not here. Not on Bucknuts. Going silent for a month at that time a year is all the more damaging to me. I am that sure of what I say.
There was an exchange with the reporters that you can find in the transcript that leads me to ask the question, will it matter? In a nutshell Jim Tressel once again stated that he had no intention of changing anything or being less involved in the offense.
I do have some hope that it will. Despite the offensive scheme we have produced a large number of receivers. We have produced backs. I don't think the talent has been there for an evaluation of quarterbacks. The areas that Jim Bollman has been directly involved with, offensive line and the offense overall, is where we have not performed. An assistant at another school says that one of the biggest myths in the college game is that Jim Tressel calls the plays. I am sure they are all run through him and he has the opportunity to change them but he is not calling the game. I am sure throughout the week that he is involved in the offensive game plan. Think about this. We chide our coach for his insistence on having people around him that he has known forever. It comes down to this. It is a matter of trust. Someone on the other end of that headset that he trusts could get him to open it up. If he is sure of the voice in his ear, he is going to more sure of sending that play into his quarterback. That is why I am cautiously optimistic that with a new voice in his ear, we will find a new way on offense.
