New DT offer and DT recruiting
Written by Duane Long

The Buckeyes offered another DT in the last 24 hours. Kevin McReynolds from D.C. was offered. He is 6-2 280. That is another kid who is not ideal sized for a DT who has an offer, or that is on the Buckeyes radar. Another kid with questionable DT size is on campus for junior day. Kevin Williams from Springfield Holland is down today. He has an offer list that includes Michigan, Michigan State, Boston College and Nebraska. He thinks he is going to get an offer. I know you are thinking the same thing I am thinking. Why are we looking at all these undersized bigs?

There is not a lot of tape out there of national kids yet and looking at the names that are popping up out there leads me to speculate that this could be a year with even fewer 6-4 to
6-6 big framed athletic bigs than usual. When more film gets out there we might get a better perspective on our offers. The best I have seen so far this year is Derrick Mitchell who is already committed to Florida State, and Anthony Johnson from Louisiana who is already committed to LSU.  Of the great bigs I have seen so far only Devonte Brown from North Carolina and Marquis Anderson remain uncommitted. One of the best I have seen is Desmond Jackson. He is already committed to Texas. 6-1 280. Even USC has a verbal from a 6-1 280 kid. Looking at the big picture has some of these DTs I was not excited about like Kevin Williams and Indianpolis DT Kris Harley moving up my board. Can't recruit elite bigs if there aren't any. Can't not take bigs either. We are going with what is out there. They got game. Every one of them can ball. Fans like to run with what they see on tape, then point to exceptions to the rule in support of their position on a player that does not fit what the big schools are looking for. This is the year to do that at DT. The bodies are not there. You have to go with the tape.

Something to keep in mind. The Buckeyes have built the best lines of the Tressel era with players who were not ideal sized. Another thing. The national picture makes getting a player like Kris Farris onboard ASAP. He is going to become a national target. Recent offers say it has already started.

Duane,

In 2010:

DT’s:
Goebel – RS Soph
Simon – True Soph
Bellamy – RS Freshman
Hankins – True Freshman

DE’s (Might move down, especially with Miller and Hayes behind them)
Baldwin (6-7/260) – True Freshman
Moore (6-3/235) – True Freshman

How many DT’s do you think we need? Two would be great, but guess I don’t see the need to reach, would 1 be a disaster? Also do you think Moore or Baldwin are candidates to move down? We’ve got Miller and Hayes but we are still recruiting other DE’s. Think we are still pursuing 2 other OOS DE’s.

6'2" 280 is plenty fine for a junior in HS. Larimore was only 270 in HS and he grew into a 315 lbs NT.

frame...can the kid get bigger...my guess is that a lot of the 270 kids cannot get much bigger and still be an athlete...
DT Size
written by Crazy 8, February 28, 2010
I really think that when one gets down to it, size only matters when the coaching staff doesn't exist to coach them up. If you get a guy that is 6-2 280 at DT and have him in rotation with guys that are bigger and hogs, or smaller and quicker then having him at that size is not a big deal. When all of our DT's are 6 ft. and 270/280 then it is a problem.

I think that if the 2012 recruiting class has bigger guys then it is a necessity to get one or two locked up. But I think that with the rotation we have with our line and the different bodies and skills we put on the field against offensive lineman that are not in a rotation, we always have the upper hand. The issue is getting guys who can play. Nader Abdallah sat around here almost 5 years before he turned into a player, and he had great size.
height way overrated

6-2 is plenty big for a dt. some of the best in the nfl, let alone college are around that height. w.sapp, j.randle, michael dean perry, etc. height is way ovverrated for a dt. it's leverage and strength and the taller you are the less likely you can get low with leverage.

put it this way, there are more great dt's under 6-3 than over 6-5. and it's not close.

His frame and athletic ability stand apart. 6'3 280 as a junior in high school with repeated sub 4.8 times in the 40 - make him an top tier prospect.

He is ideal sized for what OSU is doing.

Lets not kid ourselves about the size issue:
Albert Haynesworth, 6-6, 350
Haloti Ngata, 6-4, 345
Richard Seymour, 6-6, 310
Kevin Williams, 6-5 311
Jamal Williams, 6-3 348
John Henderson, 6-7, 335
Marcus Stroud, 6-6 310
Shaun Rogers, 6-4, 340
Trevor Pryce, 6-5, 290
Kris Jenkins, 6-5, 340
Darnell Dockett, 6-4, 285
Luis Castillo, 6-3, 290
Justin Smith, 6-4, 285
Jay Ratliff, 6-4, 303

That list covers the best of the best in the Show.
About the only elite guys out there who are shorter are, Tommie Harris, 6-3, 295, Glen Dorsey, 6-1, 307, and a few of the nose tackles like Vince Wilfork and Casey Hampton. If they aren't there, they aren't there. This year they just aren't there. We can't decided to pass on tackles. We are not in bad shape depthwise but we are not where we want to be either. We have five, one junior, and no seniors. We have players like Fellows and Moore who are possible DTs, plus Kris Farris is a heavy lean, a player that if I had a gun to my head I would say he is likely to be a three-technique. If they want to take tackles that have played the position in this class, it means taking athletes that are not ideal sized.

well said duane. this is a perennial achilles for OSU, as discussed, because it is so pivotal to determining the outcome of games. the national championship teams generally have NFL talent at DT. it's a pretty simple equation, actually. when or if OSU gets that kinda talent, they should be able to compete at that level. i'm ok with the guys OSU has targeted in the past few years--the ASU DT, the UF DT. either would have been a major improvement over guys not named heyward. what i'd like to see are more offers, and offers sent earlier in the process. it seems that getting on these guys earlier in the process is key. since you know that the great ones come from out of state, and you know the likelihood of landing a great DT from out of state is low, you have to offer more of them, and do it earlier. also, shouldn't we think that hayes could grow into a DT?
